Mistress of Mayfair
Tucked away in a basement down an unassuming staircase, just round the corner from The Ritz, sits one of London’s most sultry dining spots, Mistress of Mayfair. With its red suede banquettes, plush gold tasseled chairs and windowless subterranean setting, it has a Jazz Age-style feel to it, but really this is a French restaurant inspired by chic Parisian eateries. The menu is elegant and luxurious: begin with starters of beef tartare and yellowtail with jalapeno, followed by small plates of flamed prawns and juicy scallops laced with truffle. For the main event, choose from an array of meat and fish grills – or go all out with one of the sharing showstoppers, like the 1kg seabass or a beef fillet topped with foie gras and Oscietra caviar. Whatever you go for, a side of the moreish oregano potatoes are a must. Cocktails here are excellent, with both classic serves and bespoke creations, such as the Citrus Mirage, a mix of Grey Goose, coconut water, lemongrass and fresh lime. This is the perfect spot for date night, or a fun dinner with some girlfriends – on weekends the atmosphere gets especially buzzy, with music until the early hours (nab a seated booth if you want to dance).
